A 65-year-old woman and her 40-year-old disabled daughter were found brutally murdered on Thursday night in their house in the Malvani area of Malad.

With two of their recently hired servants going missing after the murder, police suspect robbery is the motive.

Malvani police said the murders happened inside Rose Villa at Masterwadi lane in Malvani. They said the accused assaulted the two women with an iron rod on their heads.

Mohanlal Goswami (42), a businessman and acquaintance of the family, heard shouts coming from inside the house, and phoned a family relative, who asked him to contact the police.

“While Antonita Merry Kausti (65) was declared dead before admission to the hospital, her daughter Betty Varghese (40) died in the hospital,” said Sanjay Banerjee, deputy commissioner of police (zone XI).

Based on evidence, police suspect this is a robbery that ended as murder.

They have so far not been able to ascertain the value of the stolen property, and have registered a case of murder.

Police sources said one of the two missing servants frequently asked Kausti for money, causing arguments.

Police suspect that on Friday night, the servants got into another such argument about money with Kausti, and killed them in the heat of the moment.

Police said the villa’s geographical isolation from the nearby fishing villages, compounded by the darkness at the time, helped the accused escape.

“I am clueless about who murdered them and why,” said a weeping relative present at Malvani police station.

Police have not ruled out a property dispute, as the villa and its adjoining plot are worth several crores in the open market. Varghese’s husband, who lives with their two young daughters in Pune, was also questioned before being given a clean chit.
