In a major seizure since the ketamine hydrochloride was brought under the narcotics category, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 205 kg of the drug worth over Rs. 20 crore as it was being smuggled out of the country.

The DRI has also arrested one person.

The DRI first seized 100kg of the party drug, also known as date rape drug, from the Air Cargo Complex, Andheri.

It had been booked to be exported to UK as ketonic resin, an adhesive used in ink and paints.

DRI officials seized 10 cartons that contained 250 packets, each containing 1kg of powder-like material.

Officials found that though 150 packets contained ketonic resin (in powder form), the other 100 had ketamine.

The drug was kept in polythene bags, which were then wrapped in silver foil, marked 'export quality ketonic resin'.

After further investigation, the DRI on Tuesday raided an office in Andheri (East) and seized another 105kg of ketamine belonging to the same group.

The officials arrested Anil Gaikwad, 35, who runs a courier company and had booked the ketamine consignment at the Air Cargo Complex.

Officials said that he was to book the other consignment of ketamine that was found at the Andheri office, within a day or two.

Sources said that during interrogation Gaikwad revealed that he had booked seven similar consignments earlier.

Gaikwad, arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, was produced before an additional chief metropolitan magistrate who remanded him to the DRI custody till Wednesday.

Advocate Ravi Hirani who represented Gaikwad said that his client had no knowledge that the consignment contained ketamine powder.
