The Powai police on Sunday arrested the driver and the cleaner of a goods carrier, used to carry scrap metal, for allegedly stealing and selling off a part of the scrap to be delivered to a Powai-based company.
The duo was arrested when the recipient company weighed the scrap and found it less than the ordered quantity.
The incident took place on Saturday, when Dharmendra Rambahadur Saroj, was driving a tempo carrying 26 tonnes of scrap metal from Nhava Sheva to Star Metal Corporation Ltd. in Powai.
One Kumar Rajaram Saroj, who was employed as a cleaner, accompanied him.
“Dharmendra and Kumar, both in their early thirties, halted the vehicle midway, took out 300kg of metal scrap worth approximately Rs2 lakhs and sold it to a scrap dealer. They did not expect the company to weigh the scrap since it was a Saturday,” said assistant police inspector SN Bhandge from the Powai police station.
“However, when they reached the company, the scrap was weighed. The company staff realised that it was short of 300kg following which they contacted us. We interrogated the duo who confessed to selling off the missing scrap metal,” added Bhandge.
“We have arrested Dharmendra and Kumar under section 407 (breach of trust by carrier). We are investigating whether the duo was involved in any such act in the past,” said Ashok Jadhav, senior police inspector.
