After visiting a temple on Sunday morning, when Shantilal Kavadia, 81, was returning to his daughter’s house at Marve in Malad (West), a speeding car hit him near the civic garden at Orlem.

While the Honda City sped off, passersby took the grievously injured senior citizen to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Kavadia, who lived in Dahisar, was visiting his daughter for a few days.

A passerby managed to note the registration number of the car and gave it to the police.

“We alerted all the police stations in the area about the vehicle. The Kandivli police intercepted the Honda City during a nakabandi and arrested the driver, who was drunk,” Manoj Linkar, police sub-inspector of the Malad police station.

The driver was identified as Akshay Tanna, 25, a resident of Veena Gaurav building in Kandivli (W). He works in his family business of readymade garments.

“When we took him in custody we suspected he was drunk. The medical test report, which we got later in the day, confirmed our suspicion,” added Linkar.

Tanna was reportedly returning home from a party, when the accident took place, said another police officer, on condition of anonymity.

Tanna has been booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving and remanded in judicial custody for 10 days.
