The police suspect the involvement of the Ejaz Lakhdawala gang in the Mazgaon firing incident wherein a 36-year-old real estate agent was shot at on his leg on Saturday. The attackers are still to be identified.

According to highly-placed sources in the crime branch, Sohail Illiyas alias Soni Abdul Majid Khan, who also supplied tiffins to undertrials from the Chhota Shakeel gang, must have been targeted to send a signal to the real estate developer, for whom he worked.

Sources said that the southeast Asia-based fugitive Ejaz Lakhdawala had made extortion calls to the proprietor of the real estate firm some time ago. The developer, who is known for his proximity to Karachi-based fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel, allegedly refused to give into Ejaz's demands.

Sources said that Ejaz could have preferred to target Sohail to send a signal to the builder, with whom the latter shares close rapport, to accede to his demands.

Deven Bharati, additional commissioner of police (crime), refused to comment on the speculation.

"Our investigation is on. We will make the disclosure once we are sure [of the motive] and the attackers are nabbed," he added.
