Three people were arrested on charges of abetment of suicide after Pinky Das, their 12-year-old domestic help, committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon.

The police had initially registered a case of suicide but they later arrested her employers after the neighbours alleged that the girl was tortured by them.

The girl, who was brought from Assam when she was six, was tortured and beaten by her employers and was also made to do all household chores, they alleged. The neighbours told the police that they had heard her cries several times when she was thrashed by her employers.

The arrested are Arijit Das (38), his wife Sukanya (28) and his cousin Jayjeet Chakravorty (24), all residing at Jankalyan Nagar on Marve Road in Malwani. Arijit is the regional manager of Value First Messaging Pvt Ltd, Andheri.

On the day of the incident, Arijit was at work and his wife and daughter were in Assam. Only Jayjeet was staying with the Das family for eight months and is preparing for CET and a relative, Durbha (34), was at home when the incident took place.

“Pinky took the bottle containing kerosene out of the house in front of Jayjeet but he did not stop her. Pinky poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze. A few minutes later, she started banging on the door frantically but Jayjeet did not open the door,” said Musa Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police.
