mumbai Updated: Dec 27, 2010 01:35 IST

Environmental activist Shyam Chainani , 67, was cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium at Marine Lines on Sunday. Chainani, founder member of the Bombay Environmental Action Group, died on Saturday at Jaslok Hospital after a prolonged battle with cancer. “He passed away at 8.30pm on Saturday,” said Chainani’s sister, Sheila Sahani.

“Shyam was scheduled to get the Indira Gandhi National Award for Heritage and Environment on January 1,” said Sahani.

Chainani was among the first activists who initiated the heritage conservation movement in India in 1977. He has been active in getting the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani belt declared an eco-sensitive zone.
