Ram Chandra Thakur, one of the main promoters of the controversial Adarsh Housing Society, on Thursday, admitted that he 'wrongly noted' in his letter addressed to the then chief minister that the army was in possession of the society land.

In his second day of deposition before the two-member Adarsh Inquiry Commission, Thakur made the revelation reminded of his September 21, 1999 letter written to erstwhile chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. The letter read: 'Presently the land is duly fenced with a compound wall and in physical possession of the Local Military Authorities (LMA).'

Commenting on the issue Thakur, said, “I say that this statement made by me in my letter was not factually correct as on the date of the letter”. “I made the above mentioned statement in my letter as it was my impression at that time that the land in question was fenced with a compound wall and in physical possession of the LMA. I had a general knowledge about block VI and on that basis, I gathered the impression,” he said.

Thakur said he got the impression since there was a military officers’ mess on the other side and a guard used to watch over the area, including the land in question.

“The compound wall was in existence. But subsequently, it came to our knowledge that it was not constructed by the army,” he further revealed. Thakur said he had no idea who constructed the wall.

Thakur, in his letter, said that the society had negotiated with the LMA, who had expressed their willingness to allow the project. “I did not negotiate, but members of the society might have negotiated with the LMA. This statement in the letter is made on the basis of the statements with the help of the promoters,” said Thakur.
