A 27-year-old convict who had escaped from Byculla jail on Monday was arrested from Mumbai Central station on Wednesday. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) found Surya David John sleeping on the station premises, and later handed the convict to the Nagpada police.

John was produced before a local court, and was sent back to judicial custody to complete his month-long sentence. “When we questioned him, he claimed that he escaped because he wanted to meet his ailing father. He has been sent back to prison to complete the remainder of his sentence which ends on April 27,” said MG Inamdar, senior inspector of Nagpada police station.

John, who police officials said, is a drug addict and does odd jobs and sleeps at railway platforms, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment after the RPF booked him for trespassing, and creating nuisance on the railway platform. John could not afford to pay the fine of Rs600, and was sentenced to a jail term.

On Monday, John escaped from Byculla prison by telling security personnel he was disposing of garbage. The inspector general of prisons has ordered a departmental probe to ascertain the lapses that led to the incident.
