Ratnakar Mahajan, a former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, joined the Congress on Tuesday.
Mahajan quit the NCP last month after suggesting the party's merger with the Congress. NCP President Sharad Pawar had dismissed Mahajan's suggestion as his personal view. Mahajan, who headed the state planning commission till recently, was upset with the NCP leadership, because the party did not allow him to continue in the post and it denied him rehabilitation elsewhere.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Manikrao Thakre inducted Mahajan and his 30-odd followers in the party at a function held at Gandhi Bhavan.
"I chose the Congress because it's secular. And I believe many in the NCP feel the same way," Mahajan said. Thakre said Mahajan will be given a place of pride in the party.
