A magistrate court on Wednesday remanded Iqbal Kaskar, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother, to two days police custody over after he was arrested on charges of extortion and assaulting an estate agent.

Kaskar was produced at the court in Sewri under high security. The court premises was turned into a fortress with police personnel from local police station and Quick Response team (QRT) being deployed. Over 50 police personnel were roped in to escort Kaskar from JJ Marg police station to the Sewri court. Two Mahindra Marksman combat vehicles were also part of the police troop that escorted kaskar from the JJ Marg police station to court and back.

JJ Marg police station, which is investigating the case, alleged that Kaskar had called Salim Shaikh, the complainant to his place on January 30 and had demanded Rs 3 lakhs from him. It was alleged that when the complainant asked why the money was demanded, Kaskar and his associate Shabbir Shaikh alias Shabbu assaulted him. The complainant had alleged that he was injured, his ears were bleeding and he went to a hospital for treatment.

After receiving medical treatment on February 2, the complainant filed a case with Byculla police station under Indian Penal Code sections 385 (extortion), 323 (punishment for causing voluntarily hurt) and 34 (common Intention).

But as the incident had occurred at Kaskar's residence, the case was transferred to JJ Marg police station (Kaskar's residence falls under the ambit of JJ Marg police station).

The police on Tuesday recorded complainant's supplementary statement and added further IPC sections to the case. Kaskar is now also booked under IPC sections 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 387 (putting person in fear of death for extortion), 327 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (II) (Criminal intimidation) along with other sections.

The court noted that all the sections under which Kaskar was booked were bailable in nature. However, the police later pleaded that they have added more stringent charges against him, which were not bailable, as they needed him for interrogation.

Police sought Kaskar's custody for maximum period and argued that as he is gangster Dawood Ibrahim's brother, they need to investigate if the latter is involved in the extortion case. They added that they need to check the CCTV footage of Kaskar's house where the alleged incident took place.

The police have sited old cases to show previous incidence involving Kaskar, however, in all the cases he has been either discharged or acquitted. The police had listed three cases against Kaskar, one of which is registered with MRA Marg police station, for murder and criminal conspiracy.

Kaskar's advocate Shyam Keshwani objected to the remand application and argued that the section was added only to harass him. He argued that the police had fabricated the case.

The court then remanded Kaskar and his other associate to police custody till February 6.

Meanwhile, the crime branch officials were also making thorough enquiry with the complainant Salim at the Unit-1 office on Wednesday. "The complainant Salim has not asked for protection, but we have provided him protection," said Anil Madavi of the JJ Marg police station.

The third accused is still wanted in the case and teams of policemen are hunting him. The complainant is a distant relative of Iqbal's elder sister Haseena Parkar, who died recently.
