Barely 3 days after a biker was killed when a branch of an unpruned tree fell on him at P D’Mello Road, a 50-year-old driver was crushed to death after a tree fell on to his car outside the General Post Office (GPO) on Tuesday.

Rahim Shaikh, a driver with a private travel firm, had just finished a trip and had stopped his car at the GPO traffic signal around 9.45am. The Jamun tree in question was growing inside the GPO premises.

Shaikh leaves behind a family of eight, which includes his wife, two daughters and a son.

The latest incident, the third in seven weeks, comes less than 10 days after the municipal corporation — in response to a series of reports by HT — promised a new policy on the issue.

Civic officials are now blaming the GPO.

“We had issued permissions to trim this tree. But, they failed to take any corrective measures,” additional municipal commissioner, Aseem Gupta, said. Despite repeated attempts, GPO officials, including the director, refused to respond to our queries.
