Fashion designer Riyaz Gangji, 41, has alleged that residents of New Sujata Housing Society on Juhu Tara Road in Santacruz assaulted him on Tuesday evening.

Gangji, who has been admitted to Lilavati Hospital, has filed a complaint with the Santacuz police.

The police said a group of women from the society started protesting outside Gangji’s showroom, Libas, that recently opened on the premises. “When he heard the ruckus, Gangji tried to escape. That is when four people caught hold of him and assaulted him,” inspector Madhukar Chaudhari said. “The victim, in a bid to flee, climbed a wall located behind the shop, but he lost his balance and fell.”

When the police were informed, they rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, Chaudhari said.

The police have registered a case of voluntarily causing hurt against 12 unidentified persons. No arrests have been made so far.

Gangji said he is not clear about the motive behind the assault. “According to me, it is either business rivalry or the society residents are scared that now because I own five flats there, I would create a problem for the redevelopment of the place, which is going to take place soon.”

Ganji alleged that the people who had come to attack him were armed with pistols and bamboo sticks. The police denied this saying that the society members had a problem with Gangji opening a commercial establishment on the society premises.

This is the second time that Gangji has had a run-in with the members of the housing society.

In November 2010, there was an argument between the members of the society and Gangji and his driver, Ijaaz Khan, over the beautification of a garden located on the premises. Gangji and Khan were arrested for assaulting a few of the society’s members.
