The Supreme Court (SC) directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) against the policemen allegedly responsible for the custodial death of Altaf Sheikh (22).
The SC has also asked the agency to complete its investigation expeditiously.
The SC had stayed the suspension of police sub inspector Sanjay Khedekar, head constable Raghunath Kolekar, police nayak Sayaji Thombre and an assistant sub inspector till CBI submitted it’s initial report.
SC’s order on Thursday stated, “We deem it appropriate to direct that a First Information Report be registered regarding death of Altaf Kadir Sheikh and the matter shall be investigated by the CBI.”
On October 26, the Bombay High Court directed suspension of the policemen and lodging of FIR following a petition by Altaf’s mother, Mehrunisa Sheikh. Maharashtra government and the policemen then approached the SC against the Bombay High Court’s order.
Discrepancies between the inquest panchnama and Altaf’s post mortem report were discussed in the SC hearing. The inquest panchnama stated that there were no injury marks on Altaf’s body, whereas the post mortem report gave a list of 10 injuries in addition to two internal injuries.
Altaf was picked up on September 11 from his house and found dead at Rajawadi Hospital with injury marks on his body later that evening.
