The fire brigade department has begun inspecting schools in the city to keep a check if they are flouting fire safety norms. The department has so far inspected over 400 schools for their fire safety apparatus and has asked some of the schools to make the necessary changes.
The department has given the schools a time frame of 120 days to make the required changes suggested by them.
According to officials, no notices have been issued to schools, but they the fire department has asked the schools to make sure that the necessary changes are made.
“The new fire safety act has given the department the power to inspect buildings in the city. The schools have been asked to make the necessary changes in 120 days and if they don’t the fire department will take action against them,” said a senior fire brigade official.
The officer added that schoolchildren and the staff are also being given awareness tips and have been told what to do during an emergency.
The department has been surveying malls and multiplexes to check whether they are following the fire safety norms. If any of them are found flouting norms then they are given a notice under the new act and a time period of 120 days is given to make the necessary changes.
