A Bollywood-style sequence ensued at VP Road near Bhoiwada on Saturday night, when two plainclothes policemen chased down a trio that had stolen a bag containing Rs. 20,000 and had kept vigilant locals at bay by brandishing a loaded pistol.

The police arrested one of them, but the other two managed to flee with the cash.

At around 8.45pm, Subhash Bishnoi, 22, accosted 38-year-old Ashok Shah, a chemical supplier, and his friend, as they walked down the road with a bag of money Shah had just received from a customer. An accomplice of Bishnoi, later identified as Dinesh, put a knife to his throat while Bishnoi held him at gunpoint. A third accomplice, Prakash Bishnoi, snatched his bag. The trio scarpered.

As Shah collapsed to the ground, a group of locals and shopkeepers from the area took off after his three assailants. But when Subhash turned around and waved his gun at them, they beat a hasty retreat.

Two constables in plain clothes, Dattatray Khadtare and Uttam Gaikwad walking in the area spotted the commotion and rushed to Shah’s aid. When he recounted the incident, they ran after the accused and managed to catch Subhash, gun still in hand, while the other two escaped, said Ashok Jadhav, assistant commissioner of police (Girgaum division). The police are now questioning Subhash to ascertain the whereabouts of his accomplices.

The police have booked all three for robbery, assault and criminal intimidation and under relevant sections of the Arms Act.
