Four persons were arrested by the Goregaon east police and one by the crime branch, for a Rs62-lakh dacoity at a jewellery-manufacturing workshop in Goregaon.
The police have recovered a part of the stolen booty and are on the lookout for three other accused.
The arrested accused were identified as Punit, 19, Nikhil Ningare, 18, Sachin Chorge, 20, Kalpesh Rawal, 19, and Krishnendra Das, 19, a call centre employee. Das was arrested by crime branch unit 5, while the rest were arrested by the Goregaon police. Punit and Ningare are college students.
On May 10, five masked men entered the workshop in Surve industrial estate and threatened the five persons there with knives.
They made away with gold ornaments and biscuits, and four cell phones, said the police. Before leaving the unit, the accused also attacked one employee who tried to retaliate and suffered minor injuries.
“We have recovered Rs 26.7 lakh. We hope to recover the rest of the booty once we catch the other accused,” said Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police (north region), refusing to identify the absconding accused, as it would alert them.
“Rawal was a deputy manager at the workshop. He needed money and was unhappy with the owner, for not being promoted after the unit moved from Sewri to Goregaon. He gave the other accused vital information about the unit,” said Rajendra Dabhade, deputy commissioner of police (zone 12).
