The Mahim police have booked four unidentified men for attempted theft and assault of two police constables on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 2.30 am on Monday near the Pitambar lane at Mahim (West), said the police.

Officials said they received a call from the control room regarding four men inside a Santro, moving suspiciously.

Two constables, Vilas Ganeshwar and Dhaneshwar Jangam, who reached the spot found the four men sitting inside the Santro.

One of them got off and moved towards an Indica parked behind.

He then tried to break open the door of the Indica, said the police.

“On seeing the policemen, the accused who was trying to open the lock got back into the Santro and they zipped towards Bandra after dashing the constables’ motorbike,” said police inspector Sadashiv Salunkhe.

The injured constables informed the police control room, but the accused managed to escape.

The injured constables were taken to Bhabha hospital and discharged later.

The constables noted the vehicle number of the accused, but they found one digit missing.

“We suspect the car that the accused used for the crime could have been a stolen one,” added Salunkhe. The police said the accused were aged between 20 and 25 years and were of medium built.

“It all happened within a fraction of seconds so I failed to properly see every one in the Santro,” said Ganeshwar. He added: “But I can’t forget one of them who was wearing a black vest. I can clearly remember his face. We will make sure the accused are arrested.”
