A foetus was found abandoned in the toilet of civic-run Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar on Thursday.

The incident came to light when patients and their families complained about the choked toilet. The hospital authorities informed the police, after which a case was filed against an unidentified person under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the Indian Penal Code.

"We are looking at the footage from the close-circuit television cameras installed in the hospital premises. We are checking if it was abandoned by any patient. The foetus is 2-3 months old," said a senior police officer.

The police suspect that the incident may have occurred between 9pm and 10pm.

"We are investigating if there were any eyewitnesses. The register containing details of women who were under treatment will be checked," said the officer.

The foetus has been sent for analysis. The hospital authorities said that they suspect the role of an outsider.
