In a ruling that will be welcomed by package-tour travellers, the South Mumbai District Consumer Forum fined a tour operator Rs. 2 lakh for charging a Sion resident Rs. 8 extra per euro, and then threatening to cancel his Europe tour mid-way if he did not cough up an additional sum.
Naren Sanghvi had booked a tour in June 2010 for himself and his wife by paying Rs. 3.4 lakh. He was billed at the rate of Rs. 63 per euro, while the prevailing rate at the time was Rs. 55.
Sanghvi also alleged the tour operator demanded an additional Rs. 40,000 while they were travelling.
The tour operator had stated the additional sum was the balance amount as the price per couple was Rs. 3.8 lakh, but had remained silent on the euro rate.
The forum rejected the operator’s contention and asked him to pay Rs. 2 lakh towards compensation for the trauma caused, along with a refund of Rs. 77,000 at 9% annual interest from September 2010, when Sanghvi had approached the forum.
