MUMBAI: The Bhandup police have arrested four alleged burglars who created havoc in the eastern suburbs with multiple burglaries during the ongoing vacation season.
The police suspect the four were involved in recent break-ins at Bhandup, Kanjurmarg, Ghatkopar, Kalva and Rabale.
They allegedly broke into 15 rooms at a Kanjurmarg chawl and stole Rs5.9 lakh earlier this month, while the families that lived there were on vacation. The gang was known for conducting multiple break-ins in a single night.
The police seized 50 grams of gold jewellery from the accused, identified as Vicky Poojari, 27, Jay Pujari, 24, Chandan Singh, 21, and Sonu Jacob, 21. They also seized various tools allegedly used to conduct the break-ins. The four were arrested after the police got a tip-off that they were going to Nahur to conduct more burglaries.
Vinay Rathod, deputy commissioner of police, zone 7, said, “The accused knew well the areas they targeted. Residents were furious over the burglaries and we took it as a challenge to crack the cases. We got our first clue from CCTV footage in which we identified a history-sheeter. We tracked him and soon arrested the four suspects.”
“I n Bhandup alone, t he accused were involved in 10 cases. They are history-sheeters and have been arrested previously in similar cases,” Rathod added.
