mumbai Updated: Oct 27, 2009 21:40 IST

Republican Left Democratic Front (RLDF), which won 11 of the 288 seats, today unanimously elected senior MLA Ganapatrao Deshmukh of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) as its leader in Maharashtra Assembly.

Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi would be the deputy leader and spokesperson for the Front, RLDF leader Ramdas Athawale said here after a meeting of newly-elected MLAs.

Azmi, who was elected from two seats -- Mankhurd and Bhiwandi -- said he would soon resign from one of those. He promised to solve the problem of drinking water in Mankhurd area within 100 days.

Senior PWP leader N D Patil said the Front leaders would forcefully raise issues of drought, farmers' suicides, inflation and unemployment in the Legislative Assembly.

PWP would also continue its fight against setting up of a Special Economic Zone in Raigad district, he said.
