Generation reduced as coal-handling was not corrected: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the state-owned power generation company Mahavitaran of mismanaging some of its important thermal stations because of which the generation has gone down at least by 500 megawatt.

BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari has alleged documents obtained by them established that the coal-handling facilities at Parli-2 (250x2 MW) and Paras1 (250x2 MW) stations reduced generation soon after the units were refurbished because of poor quality coal-handling mechanism.

He said company officials did not fix the facilities even after then Mahagenco managing director Subrat Ratho instructed them to correct the faulty designs in a letter dated March 11, 2011.

Ratho asked the project and operations directors to work on the issue with the contractor

“These units that worked at a power load factor (PLF) of above 90% have been working at about 55-58%,” said Bhandari. PLF determines the efficiency of a generation plant.

While Parli station stopped working earlier this year because of water shortage Paras continues to work but at much lower efficiency.
