Mumbaiites can now use the internet to plan their daily activities during the monsoon. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday launched a website to keep citizens updated throughout the day about rainfall and traffic conditions in Mumbai.
The website — www.mumbaimonsoon.in — launched by mayor Sunil Prabhu — will be updated every 15 minutes with rainfall data from 35 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) installed in the city.
The website will feature traffic updates road, rail and air transport.
“This website is aimed at making Mumbaikars feel safe during the monsoon. With continuous updates, the unpredictability of heavy rain will decrease,” said Sitaram Kunte, municipal commissioner.
One major addition this year is the connectivity of social media websites to the website. Citizens can subscribe to BMC on Facebook by following their ‘Dmpccrs Mcgm’ page and on Twitter by the handle @Disaster Management, which will be updated every 15 minutes. Citizens can also get information about high tide days based on data from the past two years.
The civic body has also published a book called ‘2012 Flood Preparedness Guidelines’, that compiles ward wise information on Mumbai and ward-wise pre-monsoon preparations by BMC.
