A 15-year-old girl who jumped off a skywalk at the Ghatkopar stretch of the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) on Thursday evening in a suicide attempt survived, though she fractured her right leg. Sheetal Jadhav (name changed) had jumped off the skywalk at around 5pm after a fight with her boyfriend, the police said.

According to Pant Nagar police, Jadhav, who lives in Kamraj Nagar, was seen climbing up the 18-feet-high Nalanda skywalk. “While the skywalk was not high enough to have caused a fatal fall, the girl was nearly run over by a vehicle that was speeding towards her. There is considerable traffic there around that time,” said Suresh Nirmal, senior inspector of Pant Nagar police station.

“Luckily, there was a gap between the two vehicles and the driver of the oncoming vehicle managed to stop his car in time,” added Nirmal.

While Jadhav was conscious, she could not get up due to her fractured leg. Locals rushed her to the Rajawadi hospital where she is currently recuperating. She has injured her spine and fractured her leg, added Nirmal.

According to police, Jadhav was in a relationship with a 17-year-old boy who studied in the same school as her. “She had an argument with her boyfriend over the issue of marriage. When he refused to marry her, she rushed to the skywalk in a fit of rage,” added Nirmal.

A diary entry has been made at the Pant Nagar police station in connection with the incident.
