The 19-year-old girl who was raped by her father for nine years had confided in her elder brothers a few years ago, but they refused to believe her.
“Had her brothers taken action, it would have put a stop to her suffering. But because they turned her away, she lost the little courage that she had mustered to make her plight known to her near ones. It is only now, after nine years, that she told a friend who convinced her to approach the police,” said an official from the Nirmal Nagar police station.
The girl’s mother passed away in 1997 when she was three years old. The victim was living with her father, a younger sister and two elder brothers aged 22 and 24, in a room on the terrace of a building at Behrampada in Bandra (East), where her father worked as a liftman.
In her statement to the police, the victim said that a few days ago, she witnessed her father assault her younger sister mercilessly with a belt.
Fearing that her sister could also become a victim of sexual exploitation at the hands of her father, she was convinced to take action.
“We questioned the victim's younger sister to ascertain if her father had assaulted her sexually. However, she denied any such abuse,” the official said.
The police said that the accused would rape the victim whenever he found their residence empty.
The victim’s elder brothers do petty jobs, while her sister is a student. “The victim said that when she tried to resist him or retaliate, he would beat her up with his belt. She said that she had been scared all these years, uncertain if anyone would believe her, and that probably took her nine years to reveal her suffering,” he said.
