A modular operation theatre complex inaugurated at Grant Medical College, Byculla, on Friday will equip the state-run hospital to conduct liver transplants.

The complex has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.62 crore from the state budget.

It includes three operation theatres (OTs), which have been fitted with antistatic flooring and anti-bacterial and anti-fungal paint on the walls.

"The modular operation theatre will help us reduce the infection rate and is one of the desired OTs for carrying out liver transplants," said Dr T P Lahane, dean, Sir JJ group of Hospitals to which Grant Medical College is attached.

Each theatre has with high-end equipment such as three-chip camera with a laproscopic set and a high-speed steriliser with ultrasonic cleaning devices for cleaning surgical instruments.

KEM hospital, Parel, installed a similar modular operation theatre complex in June.
