With an aim to reduce pollution at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the MMRDA is planning to encourage green transport in the area.

If things go as per plans, you may be able to see electric buses plying on BKC roads, connecting it to nearby railway stations, soon. Recently, MMRDA mooted an idea of operating electric buses at the BKC.

MMRDA commissioner U P S Madan said “In order to curb pollution at the BKC, we are planning to start an electric bus service in the complex area. We are working over the plan to decide the nature of the electric bus service. However, we will meet the companies and property owners in the BKC to get their opinion about the initiative before taking any significant decision.”

The MMRDA may also operate electric buses on the routes connecting the BKC to the Bandra and Sion railway station. “We will have to see whether electric buses can be operated on the routes connecting the nearest railway stations. The decision will be taken after carrying out a feasibility study of the project,” said Madan.

Interestingly, the planning authority is already in talks with BEST to start a dedicated bus service from the BKC to Sion and Bandra railway stations.

Moreover, MMRDA is also contemplating on making cycles available at the BKC.

Incidentally, the planning authority built a 13-km cycling track in 2011 but it is still not being used by enough commuters and office-goers.

“We are going to approach property owners in the complex to know whether they are interested in cycling. If these people respond positively, we will work out plan to make cycles available at BKC,” said Madan.
