A 24-year-old woman from Dombivli ensured that her groom was arrested by the police on Sunday for demanding a dowry of Rs2 lakh just hours before the nuptials.

PI Rajendra Kulkarni of Vishnunagar police station said Amruta Salunkhe was to get married to Pravin Bane, a software engineer and resident of Badlapur. They were in a relationship for a year-and-a-half.

Pravin’s parent were, however, against the relationship. It was only after Amruta’s parents and relatives as well as Pravin’s relatives intervened in the matter that both sides agreed to let Amruta and Pravin tie the knot.

Amruta’s father works at the post office and he gave his daughter a 15 gram gold chain, a 6 gram gold ring and Rs15,000 in cash to Pravin parents. They also agreed to share the wedding expenses.

On Sunday, the day of the wedding, when Pravin did not turn up for the morning aarti, Amruta called him on his mobile phone. That’s when he told her that he could not marry her until her parents gave him Rs2 lakh.

A furious Amruta told her parents that she wanted to call off the wedding and the family decided to lodge a complaint with the police.

The police have arrested Pravin under the Dowry Act.

When news of the arrest spread, members of a few political parties came to the Vishnunagar police station and demanded that the police make Pravin’s father Prakash and mother Chhaya co-accused in the case.
