A woman arrested in a cheating case was on Friday found hanging to a ceiling fan in the detention room of a police station in suburban Goregaon, police said.
The deceased identified as Swapna Salvi, 25, was arrested by Gujarat Police on March 31 and handed over to Goregaon (East) police station yesterday in connection with a credit card cheating case, they said.
Swapna was found hanging to a ceiling fan with a dupatta in the detention room where she was kept for questioning, said Additional Police Commissioner (North) Ramrao Pawar told PTI.
"A woman police constable accompanying her went out in the morning for about 10 minutes to speak to her husband over the phone. When the constable returned, Swapna was found hanging to the fan with a dupatta," he added.
Swapna was immediately was rushed to civic-run Bhagwati hospital where she was declared dead, he added.
Since the woman constable's son was not well, she went out to speak to her husband telling him to take their son to a doctor for treatment, Pawar said.
Mumbai police Crime branch was probing the custodial death case, he added.
According to police, Swapna had allegedly cheated a person in Goregaon posing as a bank agent and took his platinum credit card promising him gold credit card in exchange.
