The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Mumbai zonal unit, recently arrested a New Delhi resident at Kashimira in Thane district while he was trying to smuggle 18 kg Kashmiri hashish (charas) into the city.
The NCB team apprehended Amit Brijmohan, 33, after he arrived in a private tourist bus from Udaipur. On checking his carry bag, the NCB team found eight packets containing hashish.
The NCB arrested Brijmohan under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and produced him before the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court, which remanded him to NCB custody till Monday.
During questioning, Brijmohan said he concealed 20 kg hashish at his residence in New Delhi. The Mumbai NCB officers informed their counterparts in New Delhi, who searched Brijmohan’s residence and recovered the hashish, kept in polythene bags. The value of the total hashish seized (38 kg) is around Rs50 lakh.
The Delhi NCB also arrested Brijmohan’s wife Alka, 30, after learning she had abetted his drug trafficking activities.
Brijmohan told NCB he was a driver by profession. He began delivering hashish after his sister-in-law’s husband lured him into the activity. “His sister-in-law (Alka’s sister) got married to a Kashmiri youth who lured Brijmohan into hashish delivery work,” said an NCB officer, requesting anonymity.
The Mumbai NCB found that Brijmohan first came to Udaipur from New Delhi by road from where he took the bus to Mumbai. He added that the hashish was delivered to Brijmohan in New Delhi. “He directly did not carry the drug from Kashmir, to avoid attraction of anti-narcotics agencies,” he said.
The NCB said this is the fourth time Brijmohan was delivering hashish in Mumbai. He had delivered 35 kg of hashish on three earlier occasions, all of them in the last two months.
