The Bhiwandi – Nizampur Municipal Corporation has invited the wrath of the Bombay high court by incurring an “illegal expenditure” of Rs. 25 lakh on Mahapaur Chashak, the Mayor’s Trophy cricket tournament 2013.

A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice AR Joshi last week directed the principal secretary of the Urban Development department to nominate a secretary to inquire into the episode and submit a report by July 31.

“The decision to utilize about 50% of the amount earmarked for sports activities for the entire year on one tournament is certainly arbitrary,” the bench observed.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Bhiwandi resident Sharad Patil complaining about the illegalities in holding Mahapaur Chashak Cricket Tournament 2013.

The court has also noted in its order that it may, after receiving the inquiry report from the Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department, direct recovery of the amount spent on the annual cricketing event from authorities found responsible for the “illegal expenditure.”
