The Bombay high court, on Monday, quashed an FIR registered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) against its former president Jagmohan Dalmiya and one of his employees, Krishna Mohan Choudhary, alleging
misappropriation of funds during 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Dalmiya and Choudhary had moved the high court seeking quashing of the FIR in view of the amicable settlement between them and the BCCI, and the fact that Dalmiya had already withdrawn proceedings initiated by him against the cricketing body. The court has directed both, Dalmiya and Choudhary, to pay Rs 1.50 lakh to the Police Welfare Fund.
The Marine Drive Police Station had registered the FIR on the basis of a complaint lodged by the BCCI on March 16, 2006 alleging that Dalmiya had, with the help of some others, misappropriated over Rs 1.5 crore from the cricket body.
It was alleged that Dalmiya and Choudhary managed the account without giving any statement of the account to the BCCI. The FIR, however, smacked of revenge—as observed by the high court in April 2006 while granting anticipatory bail to Dalmiya and others—as it was lodged soon after NCP chief Sharad Pawar took over BCCI.
