The Bombay high court, on Wednesday, asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government to tell the court what their policy was on temporary slaughterhouses during Bakra Id beginning October 26.

A division bench of justice DY Chandrachud and justice AA Sayed directed the authorities to make a statement on this issue by Thursday in response to a PIL demanding the temporary facility during the festival.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Yasmin Ali Shaikh, social worker Shamsa Zaheer Shaikh and police officer-turned-politician Shamsher Khan Pathan. The petitioners said the abattoirs at Deonar could not cater to everyone as it gets crowded with people bringing animals for sacrifice at this time of the year, for which temporary slaughterhouses were required.

The petition has also alleged that some organisations stopped vehicles carrying animals.

Advocate general Darius Khambata submitted that the government had instructed police to ensure there was no harassment of people carrying animals in vehicles for sacrifice.
