The trial into the fake encounter of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya will now be overseen by the Bombay high court and be conducted on a day-to-day basis. Justice RC Chavan, on June 18, ordered the sessions court to expedite the hearing of the case.
The order came while the court was hearing a bail application filed by Manoj Mohanraj alias Mannoo, an accused in the case. The case was currently being heard by the court of sessions justice VD Jadhawar.
On November 11, 2006, a team led by senior police inspector Pradeep Suryavanshi had killed Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya in an encounter at Versova. But the encounter had created a controversy after Lakhan Bhaiyya’s brother pointed out inconsistencies in the police theory.
Following this a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case, and led to the arrest of prominent police officers including encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and Suryavanshi. A total of 22 persons were arrested and charged in connection with the killing.
Although the SIT had filed a chargesheet in April 2010, and the trial had commenced in July 2011, the HC took note that the case was being delayed after special public prosecutor Vidya Kasle pointed out issues. The HC will also seek a report in three months.
