A few hours of rain that disrupted Mumbai on Thursday highlighted how the various authorities in the city were unprepared for the monsoon.

It rained in the city after 20 days but the precipitation was less than 100 mm over the past 24 hours. However, it caused waterlogging at 31 spots, with the suburbs being more affected.

The Met has issued a heavy-to-very heavy rainfall warning during the next 24 hours for the Konkan and Mumbai coasts.

Public transport in the city was thrown out of gear, huge traffic jams were reported on arterial roads connecting the island city with the suburbs, and one person died when a tree fell on her.

Wall collapses occurred at seven places in the morning but no injuries were reported.

The situation was worse for the traffic flowing from western suburbs because millworkers blocked roads in protest against the Maharashtra government’s decision on allotting houses on mill land.

Motorists and bus travellers were caught in traffic for up to two hours because the police failed to control the protests. Five incidents of signal failure disrupted the Central Railways’ schedule and trains ran late for almost the entire day.
