Police arrested a 21-year-old domestic help on Thursday for stealing gold and diamonds worth nearly Rs 5 lakh, from his employer’s house.
The incident happened 10 days ago, said the police.
The accused, Manoj Hemal Choudhary, from Jharkhand, was employed with the Talwalkars for the past seven years.
The complainants reside on the second floor of Sunflower building at Carter Road in Bandra (West).
During investigations, Manoj Hemal Choudhary told the police that he did not have money to fund his sister’s marriage that was due on June 20.
“Moreover, he had also taken short-term loans from various people and was finding it difficult to pay them off,” an officer added.
The police said that Choudhary took to crime to put an end to his financial problems.
“After stealing the valuables, Choudhary went to the garage and dug up a small hole where he hid the stolen booty under the ground,” said Ghanshyan Patil, assistant inspector of Bandra police station.
When the Talwarkars discovered that the valuables were missing from the house, they inquired with the three servants including Choudhary and two women.
The family lodged a complaint with the Bandra police on May 18.
“Investigations revealed that the family had no visitors on the day of the incident so we zeroed in that it was an insider’s job. All the servants were interrogated. During sustained questioning, Choudhary broke down and confessed to the theft,” added Patil.
“Choudhary confessed to the crime. He has been booked for theft,” said Prakash George, senior inspector of the Bandra police station.
The valuables were recovered from the accused, he added.
