High court summons additional chief secretary

The Bombay High Court on Friday summoned Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Chandra Iyengar after receiving reports saying HIV positive inmates of Yerawada Central Prison in Pune were not being treated at all.

A division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Sharad Bobde has asked her to remain present in court on Monday.

Prisons irked the judges.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation, filed by a HIV positive inmate of Yerawada Central Prison, seeking bail but he died later.

Chief Judicial Magistrate in Pune, R.H. Mohammad has submitted a report about the state of affairs at Yerwada Central Prison saying out of 22 HIV patients, 14 are not at all receiving Anti-Retroviral Treatment.

The report further says that seven prisoners died of AIDS in Yerawada between January 2004 and July 2009.

“Some of them have developed other diseases due to non-availability of proper and timely treatment,” said the report.
