What comes as a piece of good news, starting today, the Western Railway (WR) will extend the six 15-car train services up to Churchgate station.
Initially, the WR wanted to run the trains on January 26, but the launch got deferred to Friday owing to the incomplete work between Marine Lines and Churchgate station.
"The work on the 15-car trains is now on the verge of completion. The services will start from Friday without any glitch," said Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relation officer, WR.
Being extended up to Churchgate are 3 services between Dadar and Virar and one each between Dadar-Virar, Virar-Borivali, Andheri-Virar and Dadar-Vasai.
Platform number 4 and 5 of Churchgate station has been extended to accommodate the 15-car trains.
"The extension of the services is an experiment. We will observe how convenient it is for the commuters. We will also check its impact on the density of the crowd," said Chandrayan.
The 15-car services have 66% more carrying capacity than the 9-car services.
The first 15-car services on the WR, general manager RN Verma's pet project, began between Dadar and Virar section in November 2009. The WR authorities are in a rush to complete the work, as Verma will retire this week.
They have plans of extending the number of 15-car services in the future.
"We have future plans. But it all depends on how the commuters respond to the new services," said Chandrayan.
The 15-car trains will halt at Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Mira Road, Bhayander, Vasai Road and Nalasopara stations.
