American citizen Kia Scherr lost her husband, Alan (58), and 13-year-old daughter, Naomi, in the 26/11 terror attack on Trident hotel.

As news of fellow citizen David Headley’s indictment in the attacks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) hits home, Scherr says it hurts her heart.

Scherr, who is in Virginia, in an e-mail interview to Megha Sood, talks about moving on.

What was the purpose of Alan’s visit to Mumbai? When did you last speak to him?

Alan was the coordinator for Synchronicity Meditation. Naomi was going to write an essay on her experience in India for her application to a boarding school in New York.

I spoke to them two days before the attack. I shared the news of Naomi’s high score in an entrance exam required for the school. They told me about her nose-piercing. Our last words to each other were ‘I love you.’ They were to return a week later.

Where were Alan and Naomi on 26/11?

They were at the Tiffin restaurant at Oberoi Hotel where they were staying.

They were sitting with four other people when gunfire erupted. Alan yelled for everyone to get under the table. He and Naomi were killed instantly. I was in Florida visiting my family for Thanksgiving.

How did you cope with the loss?

This past year has been the most challenging experience of my life and also full of new inspiration and love. The grief has been intense as their deaths were so sudden, violent and public. The organisation I co-founded, One Life Alliance, assisted me in moving forward to share a positive message.

A fellow citizen has been accused of being part the conspiracy that claimed your family. How do you feel about this?

This news hits closer to home and hurts my heart. But we now have an opportunity to learn about what happened behind the scenes and perhaps be more alert.

Headley allegedly travelled to Mumbai to identify targets for the attack. Ironically, during this time, my husband was also in Mumbai to scout for locations for a modern meditation retreat. I hope that Headley cooperates and discloses all information to aid in the investigation.

Had the terrorists and Headley been taught the sacredness and oneness of all life, perhaps we would not be in this position today. Anger and revenge will not serve any good.

What do you think about the FBI demanding Headley’s custody?

This seems appropriate, as Headley is an American.
