The public accounts committee (PAC) of the legislature wants the state government to file criminal charges against MP Suresh Kalmadi for misappropriation of funds in the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Pune in 2008.
In its report submitted to the legislature on Wednesday, the committee alleged that Kalmadi and other members of the organising committee had not furnished the expenditure account of Rs 32.95 crore, which was given to them at the last minute from the state contingency fund.
“The organisers have also indulged in many irregularities while laying tracks, buying equipment and construction. We have asked for a special audit,” said all-party PAC chairman Girish Bapat, who is a BJP legislator from Pune.
The committee has also studied a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which had passed strictures against the games organisers.
Bapat said that the findings of the investigation in the Commonwealth Games — in which Kalmadi faces criminal probe and has also spent a month in jail as an undertrial —would help unearth many irregularities in the Pune games. “Kalmadi did not appear before the committee and also did not reply to our notices,” he said.
The chairman said that while the then CM and sports ministers had demanded action against those guilty, their letter was held up by a Mantralaya officer for five years. “The officers responsible for the delay will now face probe,” he said.
The report has also highlighted the misuse of government land for construction of hotels to lodge athletes. While the agreement mentioned only one hotel, two hotels were built on the land.
