The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested 1993 serial blasts accused Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan on February 7 from Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai where he was living under a fictitious name of Ferozuddin Shaikh.

But Khan could have been arrested way back in 2006 by the Vashi police had they been a little bit vigilant.

In his confession, Khan, arrested for allegedly playing a key role in landing and distributing the ammunition at Kandalgoan creek, reportedly said he was picked up by the Vashi police after an imam had filed an assault complaint against him in 2006.

According to his confession, which was filed in the Special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court on Wednesday, Khan had allegedly assaulted the imam because he had misappropriated some money.

However, the Vashi police let Khan go after warning.

Khan, in his confession, has said that in the 1990s, he was involved in smuggling gold and silver.

On January 9, 1993, he allegedly smuggled AK-47 rifles, hand grenades and 9 mm pistols with silver plates.

Khan reportedly confessed that he was in Mumbai on March 12, 1993, when the city was ripped by 13 powerful blasts and then two days later he received a call from another accused, Mohammed Dossa, to dispose the arms.

Khan also told the police that he left the city soon after the blasts and travelled between Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Barabanki to evade arrest and then finally went to Nepal, where he later opened a general store.

Khan has also admitted in his confession that in 1995, he got issued a fake passport and he used it to travel to India, Dubai and Saudi Arabia among other countries.

Khan also got a fake driving licence issued in Delhi.

In his confession, Khan has also admitted to have met underworld don and blasts prime accused Dawood Ibrahim in Clifton in Pakistan and Tahir Taklya, who was recently arrested by the CBI in the blasts case, in Dubai.

However, in the special TADA court, Khan retracted his confessional statement.
