The Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education on Tuesday announced a list of 25 prizes for various subject toppers in the Class 12 HSC exams from the Mumbai region division of the board.
This is the first year that the board did not announce toppers for the three different streams and other special categories.
But according to the practice every year, this year too, students who have topped in certain subjects will receive cash prizes from private benefactors and trusts.
“The prizes are given out according to the wishes of the donors in each of the different divisions, sometimes in memory of someone, or if they wish to promote excellence in certain subjects,” said Vijaysheela Sardesai, chairperson of the state board.
There will be no public felicitations; instead students will get their prizes through their respective colleges. D G Ruparel, St Xavier's, Ramnarain Ruia, KJ Somaiya and Sathaye were among the colleges whose students featured the list.
“I did not at all expect to top, it came as a pleasant surprise,” said Darshini Kothari, from NM College at Vile Parle who was the girls’ topper in economics and will get Rs 500 as cash prize.
“I was expecting around 90 in English, so I was pretty thrilled when I found I had gotten 97,” said Mayuresh Dharap, who topped in the subject.
The ML Dahanukar College commerce stream student didn’t have too much time to study English so he said he prepared strategically.
“I practised doing answer papers before the exams. I focused on those parts of the paper in which you can score such as grammar and letter writing,” he said.
