The Kalwa police have arrested Rupesh Jairam Tandel, 32, who brutally tortured his wife over two months. Police said Tandel bit his wife in 56 places, burnt her with cigarettes and even put the chilli powder in her private parts.

Inspector Prakash Nilewad of Kalwa police station said Rupesh Tandel and Bhanumati had got married four years ago. Four months ago, Bhanumati returned to her parents' house after Tandel hit her. Two months later, the elders in the family counselled the couple and Bhanumati returned to Tandel's house.

But, when she went back Tandel started torturing her brutally. He would beat her mercilessly and burn her with cigarettes. Two days ago, he put chilli powder in Bhanumati's private parts and when she cried in pain, he bit her on 56 places on her body. A neighbour, who saw Bhanumati passed out in pain on the floor, took her to a hospital and informed her parents.

Ashok Mokashi, Bhanumati's father said, "We were very reluctant to send our daughter back to Tandel's house, but I agreed after the elders in the family mediated. Tandel had said he was sorry for beating my daughter and promised to be a better person. But, he became worse when my daughter returned. He has bitten her like some wild animal. He deserves the strictest punishment."
