The Amboli police on Monday registered a case against a man, his father and grandmother for allegedly harassing his wife who attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze.
The police however, arrested only the husband and his father under 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband subjecting her to cruelty).
According to the Amboli police, the victim Priya got married to Shailendra Kherwal on May 16.
The victim’s family alleged that her husband and in-laws had been torturing her soon after she got married to Kherwal, a resident of Qasim Nagar located near Lakshmi Industrial Estate in Andheri (West).
“We had given Shailendra, who works as an RTO agent, a Bajaj Platina motorcycle as a wedding gift, but soon after marriage he started harassing us, saying that he wanted another motorcycle- a Honda Unicorn,” said victim’s father Subash Parshe.
On Monday morning, after having a fight with her husband, Priya went to the bedroom and after pouring kerosene, set herself ablaze.
“Though her husband and in-laws were present in the house no one came to douse the fire. The neighbours rushed her to Cooper Hospital,” added Parshe. Priya has sustained 95 per cent burn injuries and the doctors at Cooper Hospital said that her condition is critical.
