Mankhurd police nabbed a 32-year-old man on Thursday night while he tried to escape after strangling his wife.
Milton Noor Gazi, was booked for murder. “Beat marshals and some locals spotted him near Mankhurd junction at around 11.30 pm, when he tried to escape in an autorickshaw,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dilip Sawant.
Priya alias Zarina Gazi (25), is survived by two children, a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. Milton, a farmer, lived with Priya in West Bengal, before she quarrelled with him, came to Mumbai, and began working in a Mankhurd bar.
Police said, at 11 pm, Milton entered the house where Priya lived with a waiter from the bar where she worked. “The couple fought for around 15 minutes, then there was silence,” said senior inspector Pascal D’souza, adding that the locals saw Milton running down the lane, holding Priya’s son.
When they entered the house, they found Priya lying unconscious, then informed the police. She was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, where she was declared dead before admission.
Investigations revealed Milton killed Priya in a fit of rage after she refused to quit her bar job and return to West Bengal. Milton came to Mumbai looking for her eight days ago. He discovered she was in a relationship with a waiter from the bar where she worked.
Milton was allegedly infuriated both about Priya’s affair, as well as the fact that she did not want to quit her job. “He tried to convince her to return home. When she refused, he strangled her with her dupatta,” Sawant said.
