The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested an Income Tax Officer while he accepting a bribe of Rs 75,000 from a businessman.
The officer, Liladhar Bangera (57), was arrested from his office in Piramal Chambers in Lalbaug.
Bangera had demanded the amount from the businessman, who is in the road construction business, to call back a show-cause notice, which he had issued to the latter for not filing income tax returns for two years — 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
A senior CBI official said as per Income Tax Act, the penalty to the businessman for not filing returns was Rs 1 lakh per default year. “As per this, Bangera had, in the show-cause notice, asked the businessman to pay Rs 2 lakh penalty,” the official said.
After issuing the show-cause notice, Bangera told the businessman that he would not take any action against him if he pays him Rs 75,000 as bribe.
The businessman approached the CBI on Friday and lodged a complaint. CBI also recorded the telephone conversation between the businessman and Bangera regarding the bribe.
