In what could spell more trouble for Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister Bhaskar Jadhav, the income tax department has started inquiries and searched his home as well as the hotels of the company, which spent crores for his children’s weddings in Chiplun.

The operation was carried out on Monday and Tuesday by 11 I-T officials at Chiplun in Ratnagiri district and Karad in Satara district.

Officials said a team recorded Jadhav’s statement after surveying his Chiplun home on Monday night.

Another team scrutinised documents at Pushpak bunglow and Hotel Pankaj, both owned by Shah Construction, which spent around Rs.4 crore on decorations and catering for the weddings.

Shah Construction has carried out the Koyna dam work.

The minister of state for urban development hosted the weddings of his daughter Kanchan and son Samir at Chiplun on February 13.

“We are investigating why Shah Construction spent such a huge amount,” said a senior I-T official, indicating that they were probing if black money was used to fund the weddings.

Officials have recovered the wedding bills and are cross-checking the returns filed by Shah Construction over the past few years. “We want to understand the company’s income pattern,” the official said. The minister’s bank account is also being scrutinised.

Officials recorded the statement of the decorator whom the firm had hired and also spoke to Chiplun residents, Nihar Joshi and Salim Pilpile, who had permitted their open plot to be used for the wedding ceremonies.

“Officials asked me if I got money from Jadhav for using my plot. I told them that I know Jadhav and allowed him to use my land without any charge,” Joshi told TV channels. Pilpile said: “I have told officials that I did not take money from Jadhav.”
