A non-teaching staff member from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) has been arrested and charged for molesting a 26-year-old PhD student. SV Rajan, 57, secretary of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) office, had allegedly called the student to his home on the campus on Saturday and then gave her a cup of coffee that was spiked.
The victim, who has refused to undergo a physical examination, was discharged on Monday from Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, where she was taken on Saturday evening after her friends found her in a drugged state at the house of the accused.
The police said the victim was still in a state of shock and had agreed to file a complaint on Su-nday after they counseled her.
The police have charged Vardarajan, who has been suspended by IIT-B, with molestation, kidnapping and wrongful confinement after questioning the victim and her friends. The accused has been remanded to police custody till August 22 by a magistrate’s court.
