A 28-year-old woman was allegedly striped and molested by her in-laws and residents of her chawl in Byculla.
The victim, Kamala Nayak (name changed), on Thursday complained to the police that her in-laws had humiliated her for dowry.
The Byculla police have registered a case of dowry harassment against her in-laws and a case of molestation against 14 neighbours.
A resident of Sankalpsiddhi chawl, Nayak lived there with her 30-year-old husband and in-laws.
As per police records, the incident took place at 11 am on August 17 after she dropped a plate accidentally as she was carrying utensils to the kitchen.
In her police statement, the victim has said that her mother-in-law started abusing her when she saw the broken plate.
“The mother-in-law then raised an alarm and gathered chawl residents in front of whom she accused her daughter-in-law of torturing her,” said Tukaram Godge, senior police inspector, Byculla police station.
The victim alleged that at her father-in-law’s prompting, residents began beating her. “The women tore my clothes and stripped me and the men molested me,” the statement said.
“I heard screams from the first floor but I did not react because you keep hearing such things,” said Vinay Chowdhary, a resident of the chawl.
The police are now in the process of recording the statements of the victim’s husband and in-laws. They are also trying to find out why the victim waited for nine days before she approached the police.
“The woman’s husband is supporting her statement. Investigations are on in the case. If her allegations are proved, we will arrest the in-laws and chawl residents,” Godge said, adding that her in-laws had gone to court earlier this year accusing their daughter-in-law of domestic violence.
